Caustic Model for High-Energy Lightcurves of Pulsars
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a new model of high-energy lightcurves from rotation powered pulsars. The model is based on a minimal number of assumptions. The generic features of the model are consistent with the observed characteristics of pulsar lightcurves: 1) the most natural (in terms of probability) shape consists of two peaks (separated by 0.4 to 0.5 in phase for large viewing angles); 2) the peaks posess well developed wings; 3) there is a bridge (inter-peak) emission component; 4) there is a non-vanishing off-pulse emission level; 5) the radio pulse occurs before the leading peak. We also discuss the optical polarization properties for the Crab pulsar in the context of the caustic model. We suggest that successful physical models of high-energy pulsars would include the properties outlined in our caustic model. Subject headings: pulsars: high-energy radiation, lightcurves

Two-Pole Caustic Model for High-Energy Lightcurves of Pulsars
We present a new model of high-energy lightcurves from rotation powered pulsars. The key ingredient of the model is the gap region (i.e. the region where particle acceleration is taking place and high-energy photons originate) which satisfies the following assumptions: i) the gap region extends from each polar cap to the light cylinder; ii) the gap is thin and confined to the surface of last op...
متن کاملRelativistic Effects and Polarization in Three High-Energy Pulsar Models
We present the influence of the special relativistic effects of aberration and light travel time delay on pulsar high-energy lightcurves and polarization characteristics predicted by three models: the two-pole caustic model, the outer gap model, and the polar cap model. Position angle curves and degree of polarization are calculated for the models and compared with the optical data on the Crab ...
متن کاملPolarization of pulsar radiation in the two - pole caustic model and in the outer gap model ∗
We present linear polarization characteristics of pulsar radiation as predicted by two models of high-energy radiation from extended regions in the outer magnetosphere: the recently proposed two-pole caustic 1 Two-pole caustic model vs outer gap model The two-pole caustic model differs from the outer gap model in that its emission region extends below the null charge surface toward the polar ca...
متن کاملTheory and practice of microlensing lightcurves around fold singularities
Among all galactic microlensing events, those involving a passage of the observed source star over the caustic created by a binary lens are particularly useful in providing information about stellar atmospheres, the dynamics of stellar populations in our own and neighbouring galaxies, and the statistical properties of stellar and sub-stellar binaries. This paper presents a comprehensive guide f...
متن کاملGamma-Ray Pulsars
Gamma-ray photons from young pulsars allow the deepest insight into the properties and interactions of high-energy particles with magnetic and photon fields in a pulsar magnetosphere. Measurements with the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory have led to the detection of nearly ten γ-ray pulsars . Although quite a variety of individual signatures is found for these pulsars, some general characteristic...
